Fetal specimens replicate in wax.We visited the pathological wax museum, Museo Biomedical in Careggi Hospital, the main hospital in Florence. Michaelangelo’s art students used to assist physicians in understanding the human body by examining corpses, along with fetal specimens, and replicating them using wax. The fetal specimens were saved in jars filled with formaldehyde to preserve the body. Additionally, there were wax figure replications of people who had cancer, a cyst and even a whole body of Norwegian scabies. This field trip was very educational. We talked about the anatomy of the human body and learned more about some of the diseases of this era that caused sickness and death. We came to the conclusion today’s medical technology has vastly advanced because the physicians of that time had these models to examine.
