Katie Murray is a junior at Kent State University, majoring in nursing with a minor in healthcare systems management. She is also a member of the Honors College at Kent State.

Q: Why did you choose Kent State University?

A: I chose Kent State because of its incredible nursing program as well as its location. With everything pretty much being walking distance, it is such a nice area to live. While here at Kent, I have had the opportunity to participate in two policy panels where I was able to discuss gun violence as part of an interdisciplinary team. This was a cool experience especially because it taught me how to help lead policy discussions as a nurse.

Q: What did you learn about how nurses can lead policy discussions?

A: Through this experience, I learned how crucial it is to collaborate with others on issues that impact multiple disciplines. Each perspective is unique, and that’s why working with an interdisciplinary team is so valuable. This lesson will stay with me as I continue my nursing journey. Healthcare policy affects every nurse, and as a new nurse, I anticipate seeing policy evolve as I grow in my career.
