Q: Why did you choose KSU?

I chose Kent State University Geauga Campus(KSUG) because I am dedicated to pursuing the nursing profession. The most unique trait of Kent State University is its focus on academic success and research. We have an amazing nursing program at KSUG, the professors and advisors truly promote a supportive and inspiring learning environment. In addition, the spirit of Kent State University has brought me a sense of belonging.

Q: How has completing your honors thesis affected your practice as a new nurse? How did the Honor’s College program prepare you for graduate school to become a Family Nurse Practitioner?

My research experience at Kent State University has enhanced my personal development, communication skills, critical thinking and analysis skills, team work skills, time management, and leadership skills. My research experience at KSU and the mentorship of Dr. Petrinec have taught me the necessity and importance of keeping up with evidence-based nursing research, guidelines, and policies for patient safety and the advancement of the nursing profession.

Q: Why do you think it is important for nurses to be engaged in research?

We learned in our first nursing class that the 3 pillars of the nursing profession are nursing expertise, evidence-based practice, and patient/family preferences and wishes. Nursing research is very important for EBP (Evidence-Based Practice) resulting in patients’ safety and overall quality of care, as well as for the nursing profession. I believe nurses should present their research studies, promote evidence-based practice, and provide expertise in clinical decision-making to make an impact on policy changes that ensure patients’ safety, health, and well-being in clinical settings.
