For some people, it can be difficult to navigate which career path they would like to take while also finding purpose in their work. For others, it is clear there is no alternative than the path they have chosen. This was the case for Luna Lee, MSN ’24, FNP, a three-time Kent State University graduate. Her motivation for becoming a nurse was rooted in her passion for caring for patients and making a positive impact in their lives.
Lee’s nursing journey began in China where she earned her Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science degrees. In China, she completed her residency and fellowship, working as an obstetrician-gynecologist. After relocating to the United States with her husband, Lee faced a new set of challenges, including limited proficiency in English and a visa status that initially prevented her from continuing her medical career. During this time, Lee’s passion for patient care remained front and center in her mind, however, she worried about the board exams, residency matches and undergoing resident training again. That’s when she decided to enroll in Kent State’s College of Nursing.
“Kent State’s campus is beautiful and safe, and it is conveniently located near my home,” Lee said. “The staff and instructors at Kent State are kind and supportive.”
Lee obtained her Associate Degree in Nursing from Kent State Geauga Campus in May 2020 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree by completing Kent State’s 100% online RN-to-BSN program in December 2021. Deciding to return to Kent State for her advanced degree was an easy decision to make.
“Balancing work and my studies was challenging, but my advisors assisted me in scheduling my classes and exams thoughtfully, which allowed me to manage my time more effectively,” Lee said, who completed her Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree in May 2024. “Whenever I faced difficulties, I discussed them with my instructors, who were accommodating and flexible to ensure I had what I needed to succeed.”
Currently, Lee works at Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services, where she provides primary care to underserved populations, including Chinese and African American patients. She said her master’s program not only prepared her for the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) FNP certification examination, but also equipped her with the practical knowledge she uses in her daily work.
“All the courses I took were invaluable for my career,” she said. “I most enjoyed learning how primary care assists in the prevention of health issues and provides many diverse job opportunities in the nursing profession.”
For other nurses considering an advanced degree program through Kent State, Lee highly recommends it.
“Kent State is an excellent choice for earning a master’s degree to advance your career, improve your position and salary, while also balancing your studies, work and family responsibilities,” Lee said.
